2017 - Feb 21 - 24 » Anza Borrego (Diablo, Sandstone Canyon, Sombrero, more...)

Anza Borrego is one of my all-time favorite places. Cumulatively I've spent months here, but it's been a few years since I've paid a visit. This trip I had the pleasure of showing long-time friend Jeff some of my favorite places.

We started out by visiting some of the infamous metal sculptures near Borrego Springs, something I've neglected to do in the past.  We then made our way for a quick visit to the Salton Sea, and then headed towards Sandstone Canyon for the night. The following day we explored the canyon and hiked Diablo Point. Our next stop was Indian Gorge for a hike of Sombrero Peak, which affords some of the best views in the area. Afterwards we made a short attempt at finding the elusive Solstice Cave, an old Native American site with ties to the summer solstice. I'd been overconfident in my ability to locate the cave and brought very little information, so the cave remained elusive for the time being (a more serious attempt will be coming soon). Our last night was spent at the Agua Caliente campground and hot spring. I usually avoid developed campgrounds, but I'd been wanting to check this place out. The hot spring was quite nice and I'm sure that won't be my last visit. A great time in a great place!
