Making use of my motorcycle while I’m on hold from hiking/climbing, I explored Pamo Valley with a friend, a place I’d discovered while working on the San Diego County peak list. We found a closed but unlocked gate leading to the Lusardi Truck Trail, which we followed until a turkey stopped our progress. It ran out flapping its wings in front of our bikes, and 10-12 baby turkeys came out of the brush to follow one by one. We called it a day and let the turkeys have their place, which reminds me of a quote by my favorite author:
“For there is no land in the canyon country not already fully occupied, to the limit of the range, by their own kind.” – Edward Abbey
You win this time, turkey!
