About 6 months back, I saw a mountain biker coming off a trail onto Black Mountain Road east of Penasquitos Canyon. Its not often that I find a new trail close to home, so I talked to him for a bit. After he mentioned that you could make it all the way to the 67, I was intrigued. I’d been exploring the area bit by bit, but last Friday night, I decided last minute to do it in one shot on Saturday. We would shuttle the ride, starting on the 67 highway and ending at home.
Philip Stinis and I started out near the trailhead for Iron Mountain, and bushwhacked, brushed off ticks, and even carried the bikes over our heads on and off for a few miles. Eventually we hit more ride-able terrain, becoming more enjoyable as we got closer to home. We clocked off 19 miles, several thousand feet of gain/loss, and a few In-N-Out hamburgers over the course of 5 hours. A fun day close to home.
