This weekend I set my sights on two desert peaks in Mexico (2 of 8 I have left of the 99 peaks on the Desert Peaks list). Phil Stinis, a long time friend whom I haven’t seen in well over a year, joined me as I crossed into Mexiccali Saturday morning, without even having to roll the driver’s side window down. It took a bit longer to find the starting location for Cerro Pescadores as the guide I had was outdated and the roads have changed quite a bit, so we didn’t get out on foot until almost 10am. It was a steep loose climb that took just as much time to get down as it did to get up, and we made it back to truck just after dark. The views were nothing short of amazing, and we were lucky to see two bighorn sheep on our way up.
The plan the following day was to hike Pico Risco, but things didn’t turn out that way. Phil had twisted his ankle on Cerro Pescadores, so he was going to have to wait for me to make the hike solo. I decided to hike a shorter/easier route on the mountain, which required a longer drive. The drive turned out to be much longer than I thought, and by the time we neared the peak, it was afternoon and the upper mountain was shrouded in clouds. I wasn’t keen on making the required spicy moves near the summit in low visibility solo, so we started back for home, stopping to soak in a family run thermal pool and filling up on tacos along the way. Another trip to Mexico should be coming up here shortly 🙂
